Why Roof Cleaning is Important
Our SoftWash Roof Cleaning Service at Advanced Pressure Washing turns the pressure down, and allows science to do the work of improving your home's appearance and protecting your roofing materials. Those black or dark green stains that makes your home look old and may cause you to violate your home owners’ associations policy. The stains also create a health risk and reduce the life of your roof, which is more important than just maintaining a great appearance. Over time the algae and moss that cause the discoloration will dig into your shingles, weakening them and collecting pollution, which leads to even more black stains across your roofing.
Our Technique For Removing Stains From Your Roof
To clean your roof, we start by turning down the pressure and applying a cleaning solution that breaks down the organic matter clinging to your roof. Our technicians will protect any delicate or new landscaping in case the plants are sensitive. Once the cleaning solution is washed away, your roof will look like new and it should remain stain free for years depending on how steep it is and whether or not one of your roof slopes face north. There is no easy solution for preventing the roof stains from coming back overtime, although many companies will sell you products that they claim will. Advanced Pressure washing recommends repeat cleanings for the best long-term results.
Preventing Stains on Your Roof
One of the most popular solutions to keep your roof clean is to add copper or zinc strips to your existing roof. The strips are reported to be effective, but only for the limited area that are applied and algae and moss will still grow below the strips. Also, according to the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association, they are not recommended because due to the installation process, you may have to break the current seal to apply the strips and violate your warranty doing so. They also may use nails that are exposed and over time water will leak through. Roofing Manufacturers do make shingles with zinc and copper in them to prevent stains but that only helps if you're in a position for a complete roof replacement, but even those will lose their effectiveness over a period of 7-10 years. All hope is not lost though, you can do some things to prevent those roof stains from coming back, so here are a few tips:
Tips On Preventing Algae, Moss And Other Stains
Clean your Gutters: Cleaning your gutters will prevent the water from backing up or spilling over the sides. That's what typically causes those black tiger strips on the sides of your gutters. Also, make sure that any gutter coming from a 2nd or 3rd story is draining into a lower gutter or has its own down spout to prevent excessive wear in an isolated area allowing organic spores to dig into the shingles.
Preventative Work: If you have any trees that hang over your house you will want to have them trimmed to allow more sunlight, keep your roof dry, and prevent organic matter like leaves and sticks from falling on it, and creating an environment for other plants to grow. If you already have debris on your roof, you can clean it yourself by using a leaf blower. Be sure to push it with the grain of the shingles so you don't damage them or force plant life into the cracks. Of course, if you don't want to climb on your roof with a leaf blower you can hire a professional Power Washing Service like ours to clean it using our SoftWash system
